Gas Tungsten arc welding, GTAW, is also known as Tungsten inert gas, TIG, welding.
TIG Welding is a process that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to create the weld on the work piece you are working on.
Tig Welding is most commonly used to weld thin pieces of stainless steel and metals like aluminum, magnesium and copper alloys. TIG welding allows for stronger higher quality welds but the process is more complex than other welding methods.
The basic equipment you’ll need for TIG welding is a power supply that provides a constant current. A Welding torch with either automatic or manual operation. An electrode that is made of tungsten or a tungsten alloy. Tungsten has a very high melting point so none of the electrode is consumed during the welding process.
Shielding gas is also used with TIG welding. The shielding gas will protect the weld from harmful gasses like oxygen or nitrogen which will cause fusion defects and porosity.
